Started Bending Longerons
Today after church I went out and started working on the longerons. These things are one of the more dreaded parts of the fuselage. These things are more than 15 feet long out of the box. First they get trimmed down and a notch gets cut in the aft end. Here you see one of the longerons clamped in my bench vice. I had to move the vice out of my little room because there was no way I was going to get these things in that room!
Toby's watching the process. Can you say looonng and akward?
The long shallow bend was rather easy to do...but the problem is that the bending causes the longerons to push upward. The plans have you rotate the longeron 90 degrees in the vice and remove any upward bend. That worked, OK, but not perfectly. I played with it until I started getting frustrated and decided to call it a night (it was 9:30 anyway).
Oh yeah, I also riveted this angle (711 I think) to this bulkhead before I started bending the longerons. Forgot to mention that.
